Sony closes Driveclub developer Evolution Studios

In a statement, Sony said it will try to reallocate some of Evolution Studios’ staff to other studios, and if appropriate opportunities are not possible within the company, assist staff in speaking with local employers and other development companies.

Find the complete statement, provided to GI.biz, below:

Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive landscape can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects.

As part of this process we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to the European studios structure.

As a result, it has been decided that Evolution Studio will close.

It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. We accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff but by focusing on other Studios that already have exciting new projects in development we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers.

Where possible we will try to reallocate people onto other projects. If appropriate opportunities are not possible within the company, we will assist staff in any way we can, including speaking with local employers and with other development companies.

Evolution has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios for over 10 years – working on ground-breaking racing titles like WRC, Motorstorm and Driveclub.

This decision should not take anything away from the great work that Evolution has produced.

True. It’s more of a hassle for an action RPG series, which Star Ocean is. In traditional turn-based RPGs, you have direct control over each of your characters, since time stops, and you have time to think about which action to use for each character.

#949

Still pumped, though. Star Ocean: TtEoT is still one of my all time favorite RPGs

#950

nothing annoys me more than having to use characters i wouldn’t normally just to level them up

party experience instead of character experience is the best scientific discovery of the 21st century

#951

#955

Wow, same tree. How idiotic. All trees look like that. You people are so stupid.

#956

#957

lol pretty pro detective work there on that tree/keyboard

#958

They are leaked photos of the NX controller, or handheld. There was also talk of there being a separate release of an NX handheld, and the NX console having its own controller, so there are conflicting rumors right now.

#959

ALLEGED

It’s a rumor until it’s confirmed, until then it’s alleged.

#960

I’m going with #teamreal.

#961

Redditer who leaked the first pictures has now revealed that the whole thing was a hoax.

#962

fuck i wish i had thought of it

#963

Well shit.

#964

Well, take this as a lesson I guess, but I bloody did tell you.

Started playing Elite: Dangerous over the weekend.

It’s… it’s amazing. The learning curve is ungodly, but after a few solid hours of playing, after many many restarts, I’m finally starting to get a grasp of it. Galaxy map is a fucking mess, tutorials do a great job of teaching you how to fly, but not really how the game is played or what anything means. I spent like a half hour the other day, outside the starting port, trying to figure out how to disable “mass lock” because I couldn’t hyperjump while that was active, but turns out you get mass locked when you’re near a start port, so I had to fly away and then jump. Lots of annoying shit like that.

Completed a big mission for the cartels for like 100k on Sunday, first time I was able to actually upgrade my ship. Wonder how long it will be before I lose it, haha. I want to get into Mining and trading. Hopefully I can save up for a ship with a mining laser and better cargo space. I was able to purchase a docking computer, so I don’t have to fuck around with docking manually anymore. Single biggest pain in the ass of this game, but at the same time I respect their dedication to realistic space piloting.

Watching people play EVE: Valkyrie, that game seems much more accessible, more akin to an arcade game, but as a result of that EVE’s depth seems a fraction of Elite’s. Elite is fucking SPACE DEEP.

Getting into this game is getting me more hyped for VR, and I’ve already hit maximum hype a long time ago.

I really enjoy Elite: Dangerous as well. I like the manual aspects of flying, that it isn’t easy and is a skill to learn. I always enjoy doing a fast docking procedure and hitting the mark perfectly.

It’s both good and bad, but I enjoy that the game doesn’t force you to do anything really. Obviously some of that is due to lack of story content, but there is depth there if you want to find it, in trading, combat or exploration.

My only issue, which isn’t the games fault, is I don’t know anyone else playing it so it has been an entirely solitary game for myself.
