Great conference.

That Shenmue 3 kickstarter is total bullshit. It’ll be 99% funded by a big publisher. They’re basically using Kickstarter as a pre-order gauge.

#25

I want PC/PS4 ports of the first two games before I’m excited about the sequel. A short video summery isn’t enough.

#26

Oh shit yeahr forgot they’re doing a PC version.

Also sounds like FF7R is going to be multi-plat too with timed exclusivity for PS4.

#27

Yeah, it will likely be released for both XB1 and PC.

#28

New screenshots released for a handful of smaller titles.

#29

TLG was my fave tho. God it looks perfect even with some slightly last gen looks. The animation work is excellent.

#30

I don’t want to put words in his mouth but he might have been scoffing at the notion of funding it. Video game kickstarters haven’t been the most positive thing of late.

I agree that many Kickstarter game projects have left a sour taste in people’s mouths, but Shenmue 3 should be the exception to that pessimism because of its legacy, and for the passion that the fans have shown for Shenmue since Shenmue 1 released for the Dreamcast in 2000. They’ve never stopped showing support and adoration for the story and characters. In this case, it’s because the story was left incomplete, and Shenmue 2 had a major cliffhanger at the end. Passionate and devoted fans can make a difference, even if they are a minority. A good example of this is Mother 3. When Earthbound 64 was cancelled, it was thought that was the end of Mother, but because Mother fandom is so strong (and crazy to some degree, admittedly), it resulted in Mother 3 switching development to the GBA.

#33

Oh and look at that Sony have just announced they’re funding Shenmue 3. Shocking.

#34

This.

#35

I expect Shenmue 3 to flop as a game. Doubt they will update the gameplay enough and the old mechanics didn’t age well. I’m tired of big companies abusing Kickstarter to guage interest. Really makes it hard for legitimate Indies that have no other way to get funded to use it as the money and good will is burned by the big companies.

#36

Yeah, that is lame. I’m sure they could setup some sort of proper poll to determine if people would buy Shenmue 3 without enticing fans with a false notion that the $2 million they’re asking for matters ultimately. It’s deceiving. They figure that they could get extra money from the hundreds and thousands of money people are pouring into the KS. On the other hand, if Sony is going to give Yu Suzuki and his team a budget between $40-50 million, then maybe they’re playing it safe by having fans show just how much they want the game. Going by petitions and of the like isn’t enough for them. Unfortunately, this seems like the only way that Sony was going to make Shenmue 3 happen.

#38

loooooooooooooool

The thirst is real.

#39

I don’t believe that using Kickstarter to gauge interest is deceiving. The funding from Sony could be conditional and if Ys Net couldn’t raise $2 million by themselves then Sony might have backed out from the deal.

It’s deceiving gamers into thinking that’s all it takes to make a game or that contributing gets you the game. At this point even with Sony’s money there is no guarantee that the game will be released so why even use Kickstarter? It is a marketing ploy and a waste of crowd funding good will.
