E3 2015: Sony press conference
I’m excited to see what Sony brings to the table this year, honestly. MS has set the bar pretty high, but its not unbeatable. Not really sure if there’s much they could hide up their sleeves, though. From what I hear they’re putting a large sum of their eggs in the “Morpheus” basket. And real talk, I don’t see it panning out for them. Unless they can pull off some software wizardry to really optimize games for their limited hardware, and they develop/cultivate truly amazing VR experiences for their platform. And those are two big butts.
Bethesda stealing the show for me, personally. I wish Valve had some form of presence this year
You wanted The Last Guardian? Boom. You wanted FF7 remake? Fine. You want Shenmue 3? Fuck it, let’s do that too.
Wait…

You’re announcing that you’re kicksarting your game… at E3.
The highest and most prestigious event in world wide gaming. You’re announcing your kickstarter. At Sony’s conference no less.
Where you put up a campaign, and the game doesn’t get made if enough people don’t pay you ahead of time.
You know that game is already 100% funded. They just want that castlevania mania money.

What if UC4 cuts out again and they go through those double doors and it’s the hallway from P.T.
There’s still time for one more thing!
That was an absolute shock-and-awe E3 press conference from Sony. They have been known to surprise people from time to time at E3, but this has hands-down been the most mind-numbing series of announcements. Usually, we’ve come to expect one major third party game that we’ve been collectively anticipating, but we’ve received not one, not two, but three dream games announced. Shenmue 3, Final Fantasy 7 remake, and The Last Guardian all on one stage. That still feels weird typing out. Wow.
And what a trailer the Final Fantasy 7 remake is. Being able to see that entire world, in addition to its characters and events brought to life in HD on current-gen hardware will be excellent. Interesting to note that you could see a billboard of Aya Brea, the Parasite Eve main character. Another nice tidbit is that at the end, Roberto Ferrari is listed as a co-character designer. He is the character designer for Final Fantasy 15.
The Last Guardian opening video was a perfect touch, and it set the tone for what to expect during the rest of the conference, at least I thought so. They didn’t show anything substantially different than what we’ve seen in the past, but at the very least, they gave us a glimpse of what type of game it would be. Puzzle solving and platforming.
I was watching the Giant Bomb stream, and Jeff was immediately unhappy about the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter announcement. He scoffed at the slogan “#SaveShenmue”. I thought he was too harsh on it. It’s well on its way in reaching its goal of $2 million. I’m confident it’ll reach well within the range of $5 to $10 million. I believe Sony is helping out with the rest of funding. Who else would? Sega? lol!
Other than that, Horizon Zero Dawn is my favorite new IP of E3 so far. Even though it’s the tried-but-true setting of post-apocalyptic, it manages to be fresh by having robotic dinosaurs. It was also how they presented the premise of the story in the trailer that captured my imagination. I think it’ll be a great experience.
Just a couple more thoughts. I didn’t like what I saw of World of Final Fantasy and I was floored by the Uncharted 4 gameplay. That was a crazy car scene.
