If you could own one old console, which would it be?

#1

I came close to buying an SNES at a used book store today. It was $50 with the connector cord and $5 extra for the controller, which is funny to me, but okay. I originally went in checking to see if they had a used Saturn, but no dice. SNES was the oldest console they had available. There were some PS1’s as well, and now that I think about it, it would be cool to get one for modding purposes with the intention of playing fan translated games from the 32 bit era. Anyhow, there aren’t any “classic” SNES games that I haven’t played, and hunting down SNES RPGs can be a pricey endeavor. Would be nice to own the Secret of Mana and FF6 cartridges.

How about you guys? What old console would you like to own now?

I’ve got an N64, PS1, Dreamcast, SNES, GBC. If there’s anything else I wanted to play I’d just emulate it.

#3

Fuck your scenario and get a PC to emulate all the consoles.

#4

Console emulation for older consoles has significantly improved.

I own two PS2’s (original and slim model), N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast, GBC, and GBA, as far as old consoles are concerned.

What Saturn games are the “must haves”?

#5

Laboured - That’s not a bad idea at all. My PC specs are close to the latest.

#6

Also get Guardian Heroes if possible.

#7

You don’t need a high end PC to emulate older consoles. It doesn’t hurt to have nice CPU/GPU for more modern consoles though.

#8

True.

#9

Emulation mostly requires a good CPU, more so than GPUs.

Which GPU do I need?

Compared to processors, choosing a GPU for Dolphin is a fairly simple task. The more powerful the graphics card, the more pixels and enhancements you can throw at it before you’ll see slowdown. However, the biggest thing to watch for is making sure the GPU supports DirectX11.1 and OpenGL 4.4. Dolphin emulates a console that functions very differently from a traditional PC, and uses the latest D3D and OGL features to reduce overhead. If you do not have those extensions, performance will suffer.

#11

Ah, Dolphin’s friggin great. Also it’s an emulator for the most modern possible console you can get, probably why it can efficiently make GPU calls.

Pretty sure that emulators for older consoles are much more CPU reliant tho,

#13

Ooooh I thought you meant like playing multi plats for X360/PS3 lol

#14

With all the early Nintendo/Sega consoles emulated, it’d probably be an Atari 7800.

That was the first non-handheld console my family bought.

#15

I legit forgot ps2 is an old console now

#16

ps1, or alternatively a Dreamcast if i could read moonspeak

There isn’t an old console that I feel strong enough to want to own, otherwise I would have bought it by now. There are two I’m mildly interested in. My og xbox broke and got rid of it and the games straight away. Sometimes I thought to myself it would have been nice to replace it and play the games I had on it. Panzer Dragoon Orta and Otogi games I would have liked to play more of and complete. Then you have the wonderswan, it’s a handheld that was only released in Japan. Honestly I don’t know what exclusives it has, but its design looks good and it has Final Fantasy games too. I’m curious to know more about it.

#18

The WonderSwan is essentially “What if Gunpei Yokoi created a GameBoy Advance?”
