Wut, why?
Last movie I’ve seen:
Star Wars Episode III from the original trilogy. It was okay, probably ahead of its time. I do prefer episode II too though, it felt like it had better pacing.

Fish Tank | Andrea Arnold | 2009 | UK | 123 min | DVD | Drama | Life’s a bitch and then you die
I am just going to ditch a semblance of eloquence for the moment and just say that I really loved this one. The film is at its best when a strong sense of gracefulness takes over, like when Connor (Michael Fassbender) carries Mia (The very cute Katie Jarvis) to her bed. It was so gentle, which was a stunning contrast to the turmoil of Mia’s very existence. This was symbolized by her mother commenting that she could not stop crying for days after birth. A little heavy handed of a detail, but it was far from disruptive.
The director seems to love intimacy not just with camera movement, but sound. It was not a chore to adore the breathing of the actors and the atmosphere, which is immersive without ever being smothering like the sounds of Mia’s neighborhood providing a strong pulse that holds me even during the occasional meandering moment. It was slightly disappointing to witness an ill-advised twist involving a near drowning, but the path of the film quickly righted itself and established an understated hope for Mia’s future, one that hopefully holds much more of that powerful vulnerability and peace that her passion of dance brings to her life.

BBC’s Life Story (2014) is perhaps not as great as Planet Earth or Life, but totally worth watching if you like nature documentaries.

I saw Inglorious Basterds again last night, my gf’s first time. Better than I remember in some areas, not quite as perfect in others. Overall still a classic.

Before I Go to Sleep was a good psychological thriller. Nicole Kidman was in it, and I hadn’t seen her in a movie in some time. It’s about a woman who wakes up every day with her memories wiped clean from the previous day. Terrifying premise.
I saw it last night. It was a great movie. Violent as hell.

I Saw The Devil | Kim Jee-woon | 2010 | SK |141 min | HD | Crime | Drama | Horror | Relentless
Part thriller, part action, part drama, this genre cocktail is a steroid infused revenge story unlike anything I’ve seen. A man takes revenge to an exponential level by playing catch and release, not satisfied with just taking his life. Choi Min-Sik (Oh Dae Su from Oldboy) brings his A game and creates a deliciously diabolical villain as Kyung-chul. His character is on edge throughout this story, and you feel the little sanity he has start to slip. His motives are indecipherable, he is just a pure psychopath. The world that Kim has set this story in is a society where killers and creeps lurk around every corner, and sometimes their paths cross. The way the environment and landscape was handled reminded me a little of Let the Right One In, as the snow in certain scenes became a backdrop to the violence. Unlike The Good, The Bad, The Weird, the action doesn’t really involve guns. Its mainly hand to hand combat, and Kim is able to bring that kinetic energy and create some excellent sequences. He has a gift for filming motion, whether it be a driverless car speeding down a road, or chase scene on foot, its exhilarating stuff. The story is consistently unpredictable, with each sequence one-upping what came before it. It goes one hundred miles per hour until the very end, the pacing is outstanding. This is in part due to the two leads (the other being Lee Byung-hun). The log line to Zodiac actually fits this film pretty well, as the protagonist’s metamorphosis by the film’s end is stunning. It is a draining experience, and it made me question on just what exactly would be the ‘normal’ parameters of revenge, if they even exist? I also thought the way Kim handled the violence with Kyung-chul to be clever. Since he is so out of touch with reality and emotionless during his crimes, you sort of feel that same separation towards his actions.

After Porn Ends (2012) fails as a documentary, but it does have a few good interviews with retired actors/actresses from the porn industry.

The Happening | M. Night Shyamalan | 2008 | US | 91 min | HD | Sci-Fi | Thriller | um…
Notoriously bad or secret success? That seems to be the two options that people give when watching M. Night Shyamalandnaldljfna’s The Happening. This might sound crazy but I think it’s wonderful. Now don’t kill me yet, It is a bad film but I think it was made in a purposeful way. M has completely gone insane. Just take a look at some of the dialogue.
Elliot: [to house plant] Hello. My name is Elliot Moore. I’m just going to talk in a very positive manner, giving off good vibes. We’re just here to use the bathroom, and we’re just going to leave. I hope that’s okay.
[Elliot touches leaf]
Elliot: Plastic. I’m talking to a plastic plant. I’m still doing it.
Elliot:If we’re going to die, I want you to know something. I was in the pharmacy a while ago. There was a really good-looking pharmacist behind the counter. Really good-looking. I went up and asked her where the cough syrup was. I didn’t even have a cough, and I almost bought it. I’m talking about a completely superfluous bottle of cough syrup, which costs like six bucks.
C’mon you can’t write that dialogue without the intentions of making a bad film. Some have called The Happening an ode to B-Moves of the 50’s and 60’s and I kind of agree. It’s an implausible problem and everyone dies. It ends rather unexpectedly and everyone goes on with their lives. The fact that Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschenal make some of the most hilarious looking faces in the history of cinema can only attest to it’s intentions as a comedy, and when watched as a comedy The Happening is a lot of fun.

Nah, it’s only funny because quite literally no-one that participated in the production of that movie was in on the joke, least of all Shyamalan.

I wasn’t expecting much. But it was actually very decent. What surprised me most was the authenticity of the set design. Turkic aspect in particular. Pretty good way to mix historical things with fictional myths. Luke Evans is also one of those people that makes everything he’s in better than it would have been without him.

I watched John Wick yesterday and Moon today. Both were really good and I should probably start watching movies more often.
