With little fanfare, veteran game designer Chris Avellone took to Twitter today to confirm that he is stepping down as Obsidian’s chief creative officer and leaving the company after co-founding it 12 years ago.
Avellone is best known for his work on games like Planescape: Torment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas; he most recently helped Obsidian ship Pillars of Eternity earlier this month, and was contributing to the development of inXile’s Kickstarted Planescape: Torment spiritual successor Torment: Tides of Numenera.
It’s yet unclear how or if Avellone’s work on that project will be affected by his departure from Obsidian. Gamasutra has reached out to both Avellone and Obsidian for more information on how the studio’s efforts are affected by this change.
