thought i’d mention this, Brendon Chung of Blendo Games (Thirty Flights, Citizen Able, Flotilla, etc.) has been streaming his development of Quadrilateral Cowboy and posting the streams to his account on youtube, thought you guys would be interested
btw arch, are you guys building your own engine? i’ve been thinking about giving that a shot, but it sounds so complicated!
I’ve been streaming some Fallout: New Vegas over the past few weeks. It’s been fun playing a character with an archetype.

[/quote]I’ve done that before and unless you want something completely different then I believe it is a waste of time. You are not going to create something that is better, in any way, then what is already out there.
There are many great engines that are free, or very affordable. Pick one that fits your vision and focus on constructing the actual game. Use placeholder art and sound assets until you have a small vertical slice of your idea. At that point you can play around with the game mechanics and evaluate if it is actually fun to play.
If you are looking for a unique art style then you can create your own shader.
Edit: The game we recently released was made in Godot Engine. We are also currently making a game using Apple’s SpriteKit.
The thing is, it is not very fun. Unless you are a very experienced coder then you will likely never get to the point that your engine is useful. One of the fundamental principles of programming is stealing as much code as possible. Don’t waste time reinventing the wheel because someone more skilled than you has already spent months or years optimizing that function before. If you want to get into game design then your first task should be just completing any project. It doesn’t matter if it’s buggy and partially incomplete.
Alright slags, what horror game should I play. Leaning towards Outlast: Whistleblower atm.
Man I can’t recommend Outlast enough. Have you played the base game? If you like that the DLC is just more of that, which is great.
Yeah enjoyed the main game. I’m a wuss when it comes to these games so I take them in small doses.
Yeah, if my friends and I didn’t all play it together I’d be going through in like half hour sessions, lol. Every time I get done playing my body is so sore from tensing up the whole time.
We’re almost finished with SOMA I think, and I’d highly recommend that one as well if you’re feeling something a little more philosophical with a sci-fi flavor. It’ll still make you shit your pants, though.
I’ll get round to that later. Got a few of these in my backlog atm, like Alien Isolation.
SOMA is not scary. There are much better horror games out there.
Also lol @ Alien Isolation, I guess if that’s what you can handle.
