Sony announces lighter, less power hungry PS4 hardware

#1

Due end of June in Japan, followed by Europe and North America and other countries (at an undetermined time), the new console is lighter and draws less power than current models.

Specifically, it’s 10 per cent lighter (what, are you carrying it around?) and uses 8 per cent less energy. The surface of the console’s HDD bay cover also now comes in a matte finish “giving the system a more casual look”.

The new PS4 model will be available in black, and white.

Simultaneously, Sony has announced a 1TB PlayStation 4 console for Europe, due out 15th July.

Maybe they’ll announce a small price drop at Gamescom.

These editions are also coming soon:

#5

Does anybody care, though?

#6

People who haven’t purchased one yet might care.

Instead of making smaller units with the same horsepower, Console companies should make revisions halfway through the console’s lifespan with upgraded components for improved performance. Sell those at your normal MSRP after v1 component prices drop 2-3 years in, sell your v1 consoles at a discount, profit.

#8

That’s a terrible idea. The main appeal of a console is that you know that all games will run on it with little hassle or compatibility issues.

#9

You’re basically talking about a hardware refresh. I don’t think the market would stand for that, I’m pretty sure most families intend to keep their consoles longer than 2-3 years. Though it’s not widely reported, Microsoft’s 360 revisions have caused incompatibility issues with 360 games. People expect these things to work and it’s kind of a problem if one generation can and other can’t.

I guess consoles just suck more than I previously thought.

[edit] Actually I guess I’m talking about the New 3DS without realizing it. How is that working out for them?

#11

It kinda just sounds like you’re new to what consoles are.

What? No, my consoles are those decorations on my entertainment stand that collect dust.

100% comprehension.
