What are y'all playing? ver 2.0

#161

No i mean i’m playing FC3 for the first time and it’s very very fun! I’ve played for almost four hours already and still haven’t done a single story mission!

#162

Ooooh lol

Good choice.

#163

I’m playing on Risky and halfway through floor 3 of the first dungeon. Haven’t died yet.

I don’t know if I’ve had more conflicted feelings about a game than I’ve had with The Evil Within, there’s genuinely brilliant portions of game in here - but with it, some abysmal ones. The game’s most overarching issue is that it’s never quite sure what mode it’s operating in, and it’s terrible at communicating that to the player - whether you’re supposed to fight or run is a mystery often solved by trial and error, and to add to the grievances, the trickle of supplies you’re given is built for a game with much, much less combat than this one, unless you’re perfectly following the game’s rhythm, but the game’s rhythm of sneak or fight is to put it kindly, fucking schizophrenic. In example, in the third level there’s a similar enemy to the one in the introductory level, big nasty brute with a chainsaw - in the first level you’re taught to avoid him, that’s he not killable - you are unamed, but the message that’s sent is ‘this enemy, you run from’, there’s one in a barn, you have to kill him, the game’s best hint at this is a big iron chain attached to a gate the character muses about ‘I don’t know what can get through this, maybe a saw…’, so, do you lure him into cutting open the gate? no. Do you use traps to kill him? nah. You have to fight and he still kills you as soon as he reaches you, so your impulse is to run, not fight. The game is always floating between ideas and modes of gameplay, which make it alternately insanely frustrating and rewarding, when you get it right.

It’s a deeply flawed, undisciplined game - but one that shows flashes of brilliance from time to time. It feel like Mikami’s various game ideas, the video game basically.

Just got to the second Boss in Ni No Kuni. Really like the game, loving the story, characters, setting, just about everything. But I’m worried I’ll drop it before too long because the monster encounters are so monotonous.

Finally about to finish Trails In The Sky, after a long pause just before the final dungeon. The PC is actually hibernated with the game still running, actually, because the last bosses far too long and you can’t save inbetween them. Worse still, they’re more about attrition than anything else, only slightly hanging on the occasional short term risky situation.

I’m not much of a fan, really. The game is spread thin across the second half and, worse still, its longevity is much like that of an actual novel, always obligatory, always expository, and rarely taking advantage of its inherently open nature. Also, much like it’s always said, this is literally “talk to everyone, everywhere, at all times”, and not enough Falcom dungeons and art. The main characters are fun, but spend so much time encumbered by the social stresses of their context (crossdressing Joshua was the only fun part of his usually unendingly stoic and impossibly capable character) that they rarely have any genuine sharing of opinions or conflict.

That said, i’ve just learned that there are some OVA adaptations and i will try to find what the deal is with that.

In other news, i’m starting to think that 100%'ing Far Cry 3 will take at least one hundred hours, holy shit. I’ve played for so long already and i’ve only done half of the first island. I haven’t even looted all the chests yet… I’m now finding myself in the uncomfortable position of having to deal with the horrible, horrible heavy dudes who seem to take ten headshots with the snipy firey before going down. Aside from that, Hard is actually very fun and demanding in stealth and mobility.

I enjoyed the politics between nations, and it carries over into Trails in the Sky 2. That should be out in the near future. Can’t wait. I want to replay TitS on the PC before TitS 2 is out.

I liked the internal conflict to be much more interesting, it’s rare that a game revolves around various parts of the same government, and i don’t think i remember an internal coup d’etat happening in a game.

I must also add that it wasn’t until the very moment before the final boss that i understood how the quartz system actually works. I had never figured out that they are actually cumulative, which was why it was so confusing to me that different things would give you the same actions. Only now do i see that it is quite literally a way to infinitely re spec your character towards excelling in very few elements at the same time.

I played 10 minutes of Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition. My initial impression is that it is inferior to Mortal Kombat although still fun. I will give the single player campaign a go this weekend.

I completed the campaign in Injustice and it isn’t as as fun as Mortal Kombat. They managed to make the superheroes feel more powerful and come up with a good excuse for why they have balanced power levels. I like what they were going for with the story. Unfortunately they don’t have assets and cinematography that is required to make it convincing or intriguing. A new addition in the PS4 game is small minigames involving the slidepad. I suppose they are replaced by normal quicktime events in the other versions.

Today I tried Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (get it for free if you own a PS4!). It’s a good multiplayer shooter filled with different modes and unlockables. I had great fun just playing with random people online and I’ll give it another try soon.

My girlfriend asked if there were any Game of Thrones video games so I picked up a season pass for the PS4 version of Telltale’s new game. It turns out she can’t deal with the fast action sequences which are plenty in the opening scene. I completed it without her although she did mention that she would like to give it another try in the future.

The performance is spotty and the watercolor effect is jarring, especially for objects in the distance. All objects are surrounded by these weird shimmering dithered artifacts. The voice acting and lip sync is far from perfect.

As a fan of both the novels and the TV series I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. It’s very fan fictiony and several popular characters from the TV series make guest appearances. You jump between controlling three different protagonists of the House Forrester. All are likable persons in engaging situations.

WA~TA~SHI?

#173

I started playing the story mode of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. 8% complete and not a single fight.

#174

Finished Far Cry 3. It was a lot of fun! Even the story had its moments, especially the voice acting. I can see what they were going for though, but the game lacked commitment to its story, which together with a writing that was more concerned with appearing pompous and caricaturesque, ensured that the core thematic running underneath it became muddled and inconsequential. More surprising still is that it shares some of its themes with FC2, though taking a less fatalist approach.

Still. Those sniper rifles, goddamn.

#175

I beat the 20 standard missions in Metriod Blast (part of Nintendo Land). The final boss fight was really intense.

#176

Oh wow. Deadly Premonition works perfectly for some reason. The only problem i’ve had so far was the gamepad suddenly not working, but unplugging it and plugin it back again fixed the issue. It’s running completely vanilla though, i’m kinda scared to try out dpfix.

God. I love this game so much. The cigarettes York is smoking in the intro are branded Police! So awesome.

#177

Have you tried using GeDoSaTo? I was wondering if all the dpfix stuff was incorporated in to that.

#178

No, but i’m assuming it doesn’t since dpfix also allows modding.

#179

GeDoSaTo does that also. I think it amalgamates all of Durante’s mods and executes on a per game basis.
