I wouldn’t mind smoking marijuana on occasion to help me relax, but I’d worry about an employer firing me if/when they find out with a urine test, whether it’s before I get a job or while I’m employed somewhere for whatever reason. More so concerned about the former. I don’t know how you manage that.

Fast food. It’s hard work but I like my coworkers.

After I graduated high school, I was working at my dad and brother’s fast food restaurant. They were in the middle of remodeling the building before opening the place the same day that I graduated. It was down the street from my high school as well. That was my first time working fast food, and the drive-thru window as well. I didn’t enjoy running the window. It got really chaotic when it was busy, and from time to time I goofed up on orders. I sympathize with fast food workers to this day, which is why I’m always respectful and patient when I’m making my order and waiting for it. I’m like that when I go to any restaurant or store, actually.

Some funny moments that come to mind: on the day of the grand opening, we were offering one sandwich per person for free for that day only, and some people took advantage of that by driving around a second time to get more free food. That was inevitable. Another time, a real pimp came in to order food. I’m 99% sure he was an authentic pimp. He was dressed in a red suit, and had a red hat with a feather on it. We also had the same group of police officers which would come in to eat as regulars. Specifically, I believe they worked for the DEA.

Bo’s post made me reminisce of those days, heh.

Yeah, anyone who would look down on fast food workers don’t have even the faintest hint of an inkling as to what the job involves and the stressors that are on you.

I work for my college as a computational sociolinguist with a focus on documenting language change over time. I am currently enacting the transition of the Linguistic Atlas of North America from the University of Georgia to my college.
